Microsoft learns CPU liquid cooling technology from miners: 50 degrees can boil

Latest company news about Microsoft learns CPU liquid cooling technology from miners: 50 degrees can boil

There are more and more data centers around the world, and the CPU processors or accelerator cards used are more powerful. The cooling cost has become one of the bottlenecks. Traditional air cooling is no longer enough. Microsoft, Google, FB, Amazon and other companies are developing new cooling technology.

Microsoft's official website recently revealed their new progress in liquid cooling, saying that emails and other communication services sent between Microsoft employees are done through this data center on the east bank of the Columbia River.

The servers in this data center are placed in a special steel tank, submerged in a special liquid.

This liquid looks the same as water, but it is actually not. It is a coolant developed by 3M company. The boiling point is only 50 degrees, which is much lower than the water temperature of 100 degrees, and can boil quickly.

In addition, this coolant needs to be non-conductive, otherwise it will damage the submerged server chips.

According to Microsoft, this cooling solution can reduce the power consumption of the server by 5% to 15%, and the effect is still obvious.

It is worth mentioning that the Microsoft article mentioned that their cooling solution is still learned from miners. Because mining requires high energy efficiency, some miners also use liquid cooling for heat dissipation.
